Your very first goal every hand should be to complete a pure sequence. Everything else is secondary. Without it, even a fully melded hand cannot be declared valid.
The discard pile tells you what cards your opponents need. If you see a player picking up a 7 of hearts, avoid discarding the 6 or 8 of hearts — you may be completing their sequence.
Unmelded Kings, Queens, Jacks, and Aces each cost 10 points if you lose. If they are not fitting into a sequence within the first few turns, discard them before the opponent declares.
In Pool Rummy, a first drop (20 points) is often smarter than playing out a terrible hand and accumulating 50–80 points. Protecting your point total is long-term thinking.
Cards like 5, 6, and 7 can form sequences in more directions than edge cards like Ace or King. Holding a 6 of spades gives you four possible sequence combinations — Ace has only one.
Use Jokers to complete high-point impure sequences rather than filling in a low-point gap you could form naturally. A Joker substituting a King saves you more points than one replacing a 3.
